According to ancient Voodoo belief, corpses sometimes rise from the dead to haunt the living especially those who owes or have done something awful to them. These nightmarish creatures are known as zombies. There are zombies among us; these are the zombie debts that seem to rise from the dead.
Zombie debts resuscitate back to life like the monster in the horror books and movies. These are the old debts that haunt us down. It surface even if it were way past the seven years of legal statute limitation for debts and bills. The time period for the legal stature limitation varies from state to state. Some are 3 to 5 years, others are quite longer.
The Fair Debt Collection Act specifically states the period limitation for debt collection. Nevertheless, some collection agencies really do not follow this law. They continuously perform illegal acts that are harmful to the debtors or customers. And despite the fact that a particular debt may already be too old, they still find ways to collect such obsolete things.
Debt collection agencies purchase these debts at super cheap prices and then proceed to get whatever amount they can haggle from the debtor. The sad part is that they sometimes use unethical and abusive behaviors to get what they want.
Faced with extreme pressure and stress, some of the customers would pay the collection agencies just to get them off their backs. Such move is a total NO-NO. This action causes the wheel to move, thus renewing the original debt. It is important to understand that some debts have already been discharged because of bankruptcy, or have become too old that it has already been removed from the credit report.
When faced with this situation, the first thing to remember is NOT to panic. Then check your credit report and dispute the credit bureaus for any debt that is old, inaccurate or incomplete. If you are contacted by the collection agency, ask validation of the debt they are pertaining. Examine and be familiar too with the stature of limitation for debt collection in your state. Ignorance of the law can be a debtor’s greatest mistake.
You may also opt to contact the Attorney General’s Office of your state, the Business Bureaus, the Federal State Commission, and the agencies that give licenses for debt collectors in your state. Customers should never be scared of zombie debts. You must always remember that some debt collection agencies take advantage of the debtor’s confusion and fear.
